MARBLING AND SUFISM
Human being's moral relationship with marbling is a bit more when compared with other art branches. It depends on thinking, observation and understanding. It overlaps with human being so deeply that, to feel the creation in cosmos in it is almost possible.
Nothing in the universe stays the same. Everything continuously changes. With every breath, the earth renews itself but we are not aware of it (Mawlana Jalal ad-Din Rumi, Masnavi V1 Chpt:1144) because we see it stable. One of the hardworking models of this loop is the marbling tub. It is so hard not to imagine how similar its movement is to this order.
God says in his divine command; "Be" that, one of the phases in the creation of cosmos was shaping the universe over water. Allah says "Everything was on water", water is dense in the creation.
This phase of creation has a certain similarity with marbling. After preparing everything, marbling artist puts water into the tub so everyting happens on water now. Water is dense in the creation and in the tub. Old masters of the art used to take ritual ablution before they sat in front of the marbling tub and prayed. He says, "Oh my divine god! Don't let the wonderful embroideries that will be formed in this tub inflame the arrogance of this poor man who is under your eternal command. Protect me from thinking that ı can be a creator and look for an equal to you with the ambition of being master. Don't make me forget the secret that there is no other creator than Allah. Accept my duty in front of this tub as an indicator of my servitude for you. Give me permission my god!" and hits his first fist of brush with a feeling of not an art master but a simple servant under God's power.
He scatters the paint over water and suddenly sees that there is quasi-reflection of clouds there. With the inspiration of God, they form and reflects. He says "I split paint on water but it is not my job to disperse them.Gum and gall is not my creation.
